daffodils (2024)

Instrumentation: Piano

Duration: 9’

daffodils is a piano suite inspired by E. E. Cummings "in time of daffodils." Inspired by each stanza of the poem, each movement explores a different phase of life — growing, dreaming, loving, seeking, and letting go. Each movement is dedicated to a musical mentor. daffodils was commissioned by the American pianists Association for the 2025 American pianists Awards, Indianapolis, Indiana.

ii. remember, forgetting is improvisatory in nature, evoking the youthful and ephemeral wonder, curiousity, and dreaming. This movement is dedicated to Helen Bishop, my very first music teacher. Thank you for inspiring me to dream outside of the box and for nurshing my musical curiosity.

v. when time from time shall set us free. is an elegy of time, contemplating the joy and sorrow of time passed, the small, innocuous moments we say goodbye to, and the new glimmers of joy we open ourselves up to when we invite newness and wonder into our lives. Dedicated to Edward Jacobs, the piece draws influence from the composer through quotations from his work Passed Time, evoking the stirring, searching, and introspection we all sit with during moments of transition.
